"What It Means to Be a Hero" is the twenty-fifth chapter of Kingdom Hearts. It was first collected in Kingdom Hearts Volume 2 by Tokyopop and republished in Kingdom Hearts Final Mix Volume 1 by Yen Press.

Synopsis Edit

Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy begin their training with Philoctetes, tackling all necessary components of being a hero: strength, kindness, being there for the weak, and being good-looking. Phil tells Sora that while they're not heroes yet, they're almost there and tells him that to be a good hero, he needs a strong heart. Sora asks what makes a strong heart, and Hercules appears, having finished cleaning the facilities, telling him that he's not a hero yet if he has to ask. Hercules tells Phil about the strange number of first-timers entering the tournament and wonders where they obtained their entry pass.

Elsewhere, Hades is furious at Hercules for being the only thing between him and world domination. He goes to a chessboard with pieces resembling Cloud, Sora, and Hercules and uses them to illustrate that he'll have Cloud kill Sora and Hercules and then use Sora's Keyblade to unlock the seal locking Titans in the Underworld and release them in order to rule the world.

Back at the Coliseum, the games have begun and Sora, Donald, and Goofy are fighting Heartless and quickly climbing up the ladder to the finals. Before their next opponent, Donald questions the amount of Heartless in the tournament and urges that they have to find the Keyhole. Phil interrupts and tells them to get ready for their fight. The fight begins and Sora, Donald, and Goofy are quickly knocked out by Cloud. Cloud pins Sora to the ground, but questions why Hades would want to get rid of him and comments on the Keyblade. Cerberus appears and chomps up Cloud. The three-headed beats attempts to lunge at Sora, but Hercules punches his snout and grabs one of the heads. He tells Phil to take Sora, Donald, and Goofy back into the Coliseum where Phil explains that the beast is Cerberus and that Hercules should defeat him, but becomes worried when he hears a scream. Sora decides to go back and help and Donald and Goofy accompany him. Hercules, having rescued Cloud, is pinned to the corner of the Colisuem, but Sora, Donald, and Goofy run in front of Cerberus as Hercules runs off. As Cerberus lunges at the trio, Phil shouts that he has two words of advice for them: attack.
